It takes a lot to stay in my music rotation for more than a few weeks, let alone for over 10 years, but KRS-Onehas been spitting rhymes that has inspired minds since the early 1980s. Somehow, Lawrence ‘Krishna’ Parker has not only managed to keep true to his philosophy but he has also influenced countless MCs in the rap game. His rhymes have taught generations to think for themselves making KRS-One is not only a conscious rapper, but a teacher.

Parker grew up in the South Bronx area, surrounded by a culture that had yet to be defined. As KRS-One was born, Hip Hop was exploding out of the 5 Burrows. Talented MCs were sparking a genre of music that no one thought would make it any further than the so called “ghettos”. Lawrence and his crew, Boogie Down Productions (BDP), built a name for themselves and were soon known as the crew to light up the nightly rap scene with their energetic shows and dominating underground battles. All was going well until a good friend Scott La Rock, BDP member, was fatally wounded in late 1987. Motivated by a tragedy, KRS-One created the HEAL compilation and the Stop the Violence” movement, which attracted many prominent MCs to appear on the 12-inch "Self Destruction". As KRS-One adopted a more conscientious, less violent approach, he stopped calling himself by his battle name, "The Blastmaster". Adopting his new name, "The Teacha", began promoting under his new handle, "Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone", or better known as, KRS-ONE.

Fast forward to 1993, Return of the Boom Bap, KRS One’s first solo album is dropped. Producing for the albums featured tracks are some of the best hip hop producers such as DJ Premier of Gangstarr, Showbiz and the talented Kid Capri. However, his career as a conscious MC hadn’t been kick started yet. Two years later, rather than join the sheep in the mainstream scene, he drops his second solo album, “KRS-One”, which changed the face of modern hip hop. Since then KRS has put out 9 albums, each with its own flavor and message which his voice carries out with dominance!

KRS still travels the world preaching the message from the Temple Of Hip Hop. Now 12 solo albums deep, it’s hard to say that any other rapper can spit the way he can either written or off the dome. This June, KRS has yet another album dropping with a powerful line up of OG hip hop talent. KRS is also releasing a highly anticipated bonus LP of his works that he produced with many MCs across Europe from the underground community.
