Hats To BallSeptember 17th, 2007
Headwear can make or break an outfit. Find out how to choose the hats that best suit you and your style!
By now, you know what style embellishes your look and you should always stay tuned into that. Since you are now comfortably established, we can move on to more accessories that will add to that individual style. Let’s begin with hats and how hats can add to or destroy your personal style. Hats not only can add to style if worn correctly but play a useful role. If it’s cold they keep you warm and if it is hot they shield your face from the sun. Sometimes they have no use whatsoever other than looking stylish, and you can’t pass that up!
Let’s begin with a baseball hat. Baseball hats are the most common hat a guy will put on their head. This look can either be worn horribly or perfectly. Baseball hats are informal and should only be worn with informal chill outfits. Wearing them with a suit or something sleek and stylish is absolutely taboo. One of the most recognizable looks with baseball hats is the “Turtle look” from Entourage on HBO. Turtle coordinates his hats with his outfit and his shoes. Sometimes he may look silly, but most of time he carries it with style. At the end of the day he holds his own style well. Baseball hats can also be worn for their original purpose, which is to attend sporting events. A guy’s day out to a game always includes their favorite hat with their hometown sports team! You can also add a baseball hat into the “preppy cool” look. As long as the baseball hat matches up with the colors of the polo shirt and shorts, you are good to go. The next style of hat is the “old style” hat that has recently come back into the stores. It is your grandpa hat with a twist of style. This style of hat can be worn as part of either a “chill cool look” or a “sleek look”. This is the hat that can add a funkier look to your whole outfit. BC Ethic makes three great styles of these hats. This funkier hat still holds that Casanova feel that it had when suave men like Cary Grant wore them. He was the definition of a lady’s man. Some say that it was his all around style, which included the hat, that made him! Let’s just say it is the “Vince hat” of the Entourage group. Another grandpa style hat is from the 1950’s. It has a small rim and a bit of body on the top part for your head. You never want these two grandpa style hats to look big as it will detract from the intended appeal. You can wear them slightly tilted to the side or straight. Either way works. Make sure the hat sits about your ears and is not cutting off the circulation of your head. With the right size and the right outfit this hat can be the perfect fit for you!
The last style of hat that we will discuss is what I like to call the “everyday hat”. This hat is a mixture of a baseball hat and a military style hat. I am sure that you have seen it out in the stores as it has been popular for some time now. This hat can be worn by the surfer guy, the chill guy, and the preppy guy. Each style will portray the hat differently because as I always say, it’s all about your own personal style! This hat sends a very chill but sexy message. You’re the guy that has style and knows how to take it down a notch as well. All of these style hats are a useful addition to your look. As I stated in the grandpa hat section, the sizing of these hats is very vital. The hat should never be too big or too small. The chances are if it looks like it doesn’t fit, then it doesn’t. Don’t take the chance! Find the hat that fits your personal style whether it is surfer, preppy or sleek. There is always a hat that fits your personality and look. Now that you know the basics, you can find the hat that suits your look and life. About the author: Rochel Friedlander has spent her last five years working in men's fashion in New York City.
