Trying to lose weight through the use of exercise can sometimes feel like a chore, but it doesn't have to if you have an imagination and a sense of adventure. Getting outside and being active is one of the greatest pleasures that life has to offer, and working out can be tons of fun. Not surprisingly, the most common exercise people use to try and lose weight is jogging -- which can be fun on it's own, but not everyone likes to run for extended periods of time. If you're one of these types of people, then maybe it's time to switch things up a bit.

On a personal note, I generally don't run all that often to stay in shape. I prefer to mix and match up my exercises to keep it interesting. However, I do have a personal favorite and it just so happens to have two wheels. After the first time I rode my mountain bike through the trails I simply fell in love. If you haven't already given mountain biking or trail riding a chance, it's time to dust off the cobwebs and learn how to ride again. One of my good friends and I used to go for a run almost every day, but we found ourselves starting to ride trail bikes more and more often until it got to the point where we weren't running anymore and were just riding bikes. It was just a lot more fun. The surprising thing was that he started to lose weight faster than when we were jogging. Go figure. Plus, another bonus to trail riding or riding a mountain bike is that it's a low impact sport, meaning it doesn't do as much damage to your body as your feet do when they constantly jar your spine with every step you take on a run. The circular motion your feet travel through when pedaling actually helps to preserve and strengthen your knee joints while you exercise. It's one of the safest forms of exercise you can do if you're concerned about joint health. And especially if you're trying to lose weight, biking is probably one of the better choices because it's actually a lot of fun. Swimming is another low impact sport that's also a very fun exercise to keep in mind.

Back to the story about my friend who lost some weight... He and I used to rip around through the park trails and race each other and explore new paths and we always had a good time. Every morning when one of us would get the call to go for either a bike ride or a run, it was obvious what choice to make. We looked forward to getting up in the morning because our routines turned into a blast! The moral of the story is, staying in shape can be a ton of fun... Especially if you're doing exercises that you find enjoyable. And it's even better if you have friends who want to join you. So the next time you don't feel like getting out of bed for your morning run, grab your bike instead and see how it changes your mood for the day. You'll probably enjoy it a lot more than you think!
