| Description: | Watches have become a status symbol for many high-rollers, but which brands are truly top-of-the-line? |
Far from being just a way to tell time, watches these days are complicated, technologically-advanced machines that may include either digital or analog time display (sometimes both), independent stopwatches, and a variety of jewels, metals and other decorative features. For many high-rollers, watches have – for better or worse – become a status symbol, so TrendPimp has sorted through the ocean of timepieces out there to find the cream of the crop. Here are five of the trendiest upper-class watches in the marketplace right now:
Diesel DZ7005 ($195) – While Diesel is probably best-known for their jeans, in recent years they have branched out into the luxury watch market as well. The DZ7005 is a digital-display quartz movement watch in a stainless steel case ringed with a weathered brown wrist-strap. It is water-resistant to 165 feet, and features a scratch-resistant mineral crystal face. With a basic black background and a green digital readout slanted to the extreme right of the case, this watch puts a new twist on a classic design.
Swiss Army Mechanical Ambassador ($650) – Produced by the same company that made the knife you regularly nicked yourself with back in your Boy Scout days, the Ambassador series of watches combines fashion and style with the utility that one would expect from Swiss Army. This variant, the Mechanical Ambassador Blue Face (model 241072), is a self-winding analog watch with a stainless steel case/bracelet and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal face. It also features a date window at the 6 o’clock position and a day window at the 12 o’clock position, so you’ll never find yourself forgetting which day of the week or month it is.
Hugo Boss Metropolis ($995) – This classically-inspired but feature-heavy watch is built into a 39mm stainless steel case with a screwed-on back that features a distinct stamped Hugo Boss logo. Underneath its analog time display, it features 3 other smaller hands: one keeping track of seconds, one keeping track of tenths of seconds, and one that’s a 60-second chronograph. With tritium inserts that project light at night-time and a water-resistance of 100 meters, this watch is ideal for uses in many different environments.
Versace Bond Street ($1,700) – This hip offering from Versace (model OLC99D498S009) is probably better suited to a black-tie event than a trip to the outdoors, so adventurer-types may want to look elsewhere. Still, with an analog date display, a guilloche dial with three sub-dials, a sapphire crystal face, and a stated 100-foot water resistance, Versace’s Bond Street watch isn’t without its benefits. It also has a patented “crocodile” leather wrist-band with a stainless steel buckle for an added sense of style.
Breitling Chronomat ($4,225) - Breitling is a century-old company renowned for producing some of the finest watches on the planet, and this particular specimen is no exception. Sporting a premium-grade steel case fitted with 18-karat yellow gold, the Chronomat (model 653/BK/PILOT) is a seriously top-of-the-line timepiece. Its cambered sapphire crystal face is glare-proofed on both sides, there’s a built-in tachometer outer ring, and three smaller hands within the primary clock each perform distinct functions. And of course, being that Breitling pioneered the concept of chronometers in watches, there is a built-in chronometer.
You should now have a basic understanding of what type of prices to expect for various luxury watches, depending on their features and which manufacturer makes them. However, remember to always buy watches from trustworthy retailers; avoid ordering from eBay or other online sources, because the overwhelming majority of “luxury” watches sold online are poor-quality fakes. With that said, happy hunting and good luck on finding the watch that suits you best! ![]() About the author: Curtis is a writer specializing in politics, popular media and the entertainment industry.
